Theologian,
author and pastor Dallas Willard makes this thought provoking
statement:
"It is left unexplained how it is possible that one can rely on
Christ for the next life without doing so for this one, trust him
for one's eternal destiny without trusting him for 'the things that
related to Christian life.' Is this really possible?
Surely it is not! Not within one life." ~ Dallas
Willard
All
Christians trust Jesus to carry them into eternity. Why don't
we trust him when it comes to living our everyday lives? The
Gospels are full of teachings, instructions and examples from Jesus
himself on how to live life to the full. A couple prime
examples would be the spiritual disciplines of prayer and
fasting. For the typical Christian prayer is something done
before meals, at church or when life feels like it's falling
apart. Fasting? Fasting is viewed as ancient, archaic,
and really having no relevance to the life of the Christian in the
modern world.
Here's the problem with that line of thinking: Jesus
instructs us to pray and to fast. So we circle back to
Dallas Willard's statement. How can we trust Jesus with out
eternity but not our everyday lives?
In this sermon we are going to continue to "unfurl the sails" of our lives by studying what Jesus and Scripture teaches us about fasting. You will be surprised how this ancient spiritual discipline has a very real application to our everyday rhythm of following Jesus. Do you want to learn more?
