Everyone has their routine. For some, their alarm clock
doesn't even need to go off because their routine is so locked in
they just wake up automatically. Sometimes our routine can be
so regular and predictable that it might be better described as a
rut. You could sleep walk through most parts of your day
because it's so predictable.
Would you describe your faith in a similar fashion? Is it on
cruise control? Is it predictable? In a rut?
Listen, you are not alone! It is incredibly easy to settle
into a faith routine that's comfortable, stable and routine.
Pray, read your Bible, go to church, give...wash and repeat.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a routine of
connecting with God, however, that's not what faith in God is all
about. So what does it take to break out of a religious rut
and live an authentic faith?
In The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses this issue of
getting stuck in a religious rut. The Pharisees were
exceptional at living out the routine of following God, the problem
was, their faith was missing something...it wasn't authentic.
To help transform their faith Jesus gives this simple, yet profound
teaching, something we often refer to as The Golden Rule.
Here is what he said:
"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to
you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
~ Matthew 7:12
