Everyone is a on a life quest. Intuitively we all know
that life is more then just breathing in oxygen. Life is what
you do with your time. It's about experiences, moments, and
accomplishments. So how would you describe a "good
life"? There has to be a "good life"...right? If you
were to go to a funeral, more often then not, you will hear this
phrase being said: "Well, they lived a good life."
Evidently, someone must have an idea as to what a good life is!
So what is it? What is this good life, and more
importantly, are you living it? Is a good life a
life devoted to accumulating things, from money to accolades
to accomplishments? Is a good life, focused on reaching a
certain level of comfort and security? Is a good life the
relationships you have with people and the moments you get to
share? Since you only get one life, this
ultimately might be the most important question! So who
really knows?
This question of life and its purpose comes up often in Jesus'
ministry. In one particular instance, Jesus'
disciples actually disagreed with how Jesus was
choosing to live his life, and in a shocking response, Jesus says
these bold words:
"If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take
up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find
it." ~ Matthew 16:24-25
Jesus is claiming that anyone who chooses to follow him has found
the best way to live life. However, to have this life, it
will cost a person everything. There's a lot to wrestle with
in these words of Jesus. Do believe him? Are you
willing to pay that steep of a price?
If you need help figuring out answers to those questions, take 30
minutes and give a listen to the launch of a new sermon series
entitled, The Bottom Line. We know that you will find it to
be helpful on your journey of finding and following Jesus--and
living life!
